hi·a·tus (h–ts)n. pl. hi·a·tus·es or hiatus 1. A gap or interruption in space, time, or continuity; a break.
Well, that will teach me to post part 1 of 2 when part 2 isn’t ready to post as well!
Have you ever had a series of things you though you had to do in a certain order and when one step didn’t happen the entire operation broke down? It’s pretty common. We see it most clearly in other people when they put strange preconditions on things.
“I won’t get married until I have established a successful career.”
“I’ve always wanted children. But I’m not having kids until…” fill in the blank for yourselves–you’ve heard it before.
However, in ourselves, it can be harder to move around that stalled step and keep going. Sometimes the steps really are necessary, but often they aren’t. Sometimes we just need to let go of the step and move one. Sometimes we need to do some creative “out-of-the-box” thinking to move along. Most importantly, it is always valuable to reassess if step 2 really has to be completed before step 3 can happen.
While January 1 maybe when we culturally think about new beginnings, for me it is Spring. January 1 is still the middle of winter here in Minnesota. The holidays are over and we are staring at least 3-4 more months of winter in the face. That doesn’t feel like new beginnings to me. Even the start of the days getting longer doesn’t really register until it is light out when I leave work. This far North, that is a number of weeks after January 1.
With the coming of warm weather (finally!) I can feel new beginnings in my bones. I see the first spring flowers coming out. The grass is greening up and starting to grow again. Mother Nature is no longer trying to kill me on a daily basis. We all get Spring Fever here in the North Land, young and old alike.
So with the arrival of Spring I break my writing hiatus and begin anew. I still have my topic stock and rough drafts. I have some great presentations coming up to write about. I hope you will continue to join me.
